CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

A lex grinned when he saw her descending the stairs. “She lives! Want a ride to the couch?”

“I told you so,” Natalie said, turning to Logan.

“She doesn’t want us carrying her around like a doll anymore,” Logan announced loudly.

“What? Lugging you around after you pass out is the best part of my day.” Alex laughed. “Now, what am I going to do for fun?”

Natalie turned and looked back up the stairs to plan her retreat. She was more than halfway down, and it looked daunting. Plus, Logan was on the step behind her, blocking her path. He was no doubt waiting for her to slump against him on her way to the living room.

She made it to the couch and curled up against one of the arm rests. “Why is it so bright in here? Can’t we close the blinds or something?”

“The cave dweller would like to replicate her living situation upstairs,” Alex declared loudly, following Logan’s lead. “Can we please accommodate her?”

“Shut up, Alex,” Natalie said and put the fleece blanket over her head to block out the light. “You’re giving me a migraine.”

“Or not eating anything is giving you a migraine,” Aiden chimed in as he closed the last blind. “You can come out now. It’s nice and dark.”

“I’m working on my blanket cure for migraines. I’m going to need to file for a patent soon.” Her voice was still listless as she tried to respond in her usual snarky way. The sooner they all stopped worrying about her, the sooner they would leave her alone.

Aiden laughed. “I’ll drive you to the patent office myself as soon as you’re ready. How about something to eat?”

“No thanks. I’m just going to sit like this until my headache goes away.” The last thing she wanted was to eat something. She knew it would come right back up. Her stomach was burning, and she was so nauseous that she wanted to throw up whenever she moved her head.

“A chocolate shake, you say? Coming right up!”

“I should have stayed upstairs with the strange men. At least they wouldn’t have talked to me,” Natalie mumbled under the blanket.

“Better hurry with that shake, Aiden. She’s getting hangry!” Alex yelled after him and plopped down next to Natalie.

She shoved him away from her with her legs while he laughed.

“Shouldn’t they be done checking for bugs by now?” She was getting antsy and wanted to return to her bed. “They’ve been up there for hours.”

Aiden looked at his watch and smiled. “Not quite. It’s been forty-five minutes, and there are a lot of rooms to check. This is a compound, you know. Besides, what’s your rush? Eager to go back up and hide from the world?”

“I find it soothing to be alone. You should try it sometime. It’s very nice not to have to answer questions all the time.”

“Hmm, I’ll bet. Alone with your thoughts and feelings. Not having anyone to talk to about what’s bothering you. Sounds very healthy to me.”

Natalie glared at him and took a sip of the chocolate shake.
